It's different for each person. Some will find a movement easy that others find difficult, and vice versa.

I didn't find it difficult to learn the basic movements. It's getting better at the technique and layering movements that takes time and lots of practice. Finding your passion for the dance also makes a difference when you perform.

I've been taking lessons with my instructor for over 7 years now. I love it!! I'm 49 now, and have no plans to stop any time soon. I know dancers who are in their 60's. My instructor's twin daughters are awesome dancers and they were about 9 when I first saw them perform.

Having a "belly" may or may not help, it depends on the individual. However, with the dancers I've known, the thinner dancers seem to have to work harder for their belly rolls and flutters to work well. Also, some of the best dancers I've known are full-figured, rather than really thin.

Good luck! I hope you find an instructor and a class that you enjoy.

It's kind of hard to belly dance if you have flab on your belly. Flat stomaches go much easier. A lot of it is really the hips. You have to be able to move them around without moving your body or anything else. For belly dancing, if you're stiff, it's never going to work.
