First, make sure you have a dependable spotter that will make sure you don't crack your head open. Next, I'd advise mats, but a soft carpet will also do. Better, if you can practice on a trampoline, that's also good. I do a lot of stuff on trampolines, and it's a good way to learn. Now, you didn't say whether you can already do it somewhere else? Dance, gymnastics, cheerleading? A good way to build muscle up for it is to do a back bend, put your feet together, and pull over (like a back walkover, but keep your feet together). Not as easy as it sounds, by the way. Now I'm going to assume you have no clue how to do one. Make sure you have somebody that has experience helping you. I don't want to be responsible for your death. Splits, by the way, take practice. I happened to get mine on a trampoline...bad experience. Anyway, since I was about 9 I've had my right split all the way down to the floor. I'm 13 and I have a good left one, but my middle one...well...sucks. So just practice and stretch out a lot. Again, don't try to learn a back handspring or other tumbling things at home if you can't do them in general. I got mats for christmas a couple years ago, so I like to do roundoff back handsprings in my living room (I have a very large living room...) Remember, don't be disappointed. It takes practice. Oh, also. Make sure you keep your feet/legs together. It helps. A lot. Okay. I hope I helped :) and Good luck.

*Edit* I hurt myself doing a roundoff back handspring once. I screwed up my fingers for about a month and hit my head. It hurt. But I got right back up and did a better one (meaning I didn't die. It wasn't very good, though). Please make sure your arms are locked and your hands are not pointed out. I know a couple girls who have hyper extended their arms doing that. And then there's the risk of falling on your head. O_O Again, good luck and hope I didn't sound cranky.

Practice practice, practice. Doing a split is a matter of warming up first. Runing in place, ,jumping jacks or just free dancing for a good 15 minuets is always needed.Always point your toes.Go as far as you can to the floor hold for two minuets and then go another inch until u do reach the floor.Keep your hips as straight as u can.
Back flips r harder because u have to stretch your back while blindly finding the floor. It is really a matter of keeping everything in a line.Everythings is straight, toes togeather and pointed.Pretend u r jumping over a huge ball...backwards! Of course have a spotter hold your lower back and lift u up. Good luck it's a blast once u get it on our own

me and u r like the same except can do regular splits but not sraddle splits. try doing a bacwards hand spring on a trampolien.
