Position:Home>Dancing> What does my ballet teacher mean by turnout???????

Question:ok so when ur feet are not turned out they look like this
!!
but when they r turned out they look like this.
v

so u turn out from the hip and if u would tendu forward to the mirror in parallel (ur feet are in parallel when they r not turned out) u would see all 5 toes WHICH IS BAD IN BALLET! so when u turn out u would see ur heel in the mirror and ur toes would face the wall to the right or left of you. the only way to get ample turn out is from the hip which sometimes i do not do. i try to do it from the knee which never ever works. so what u need to do to improve turn out is do a froggy stretch. basically a butterfly on ur tummy. haha.

u use turn out in all of ballet. in ur barre work in plies, tendus, releves, and batmats
then in across the floor in turns, bourres, and echappes and everything else

like seriously u gotta turn out in ballet and if u still do not get it talk to ur teacher after class

leg should be turned out from the hips

It means that your toes should be facing out (i.e. your right foot's toes facing your right, and your left foot's toes, the left)

I dance competively and have been dancing since I was 3 years old. When I was little I also had no idea what turnout meant, but now I know. Turnout usually means that they want you to make your feet got out sideways, not parallel. I hope I helped...I tried my best. I am sorry if it is not the answer you are looking for, but it is much easier to show it to you in person, rather than in words.

Toes facing out, and more importantly, knees facing out as much as your toes. When you're standing normally, the front part of the legs is facing forward (duh). Turnout means you turn your legs out so that the front part of the legs is facing to the sides.

legs turned out from hips

I know exactly what turnout is, but it's a matter of finding the right words to explain it. If you have good turn out it means that when you, say for example, stand in first position your knees, toes, fronts of your thighs etc are all pointing outward, which is what you want. Another word for it could be 'opening up your hips.'

Another example would be when you do a tondue (probably spelt wrong) forwards your leg would face the side rather then up to the ceiling.

Basically it just means you have good ballet posture in your legs. I hope this helps somewhat!! Sorry if I'm not so great at explaining, I seem to be at loss of words when I explain things.
