Position:Home>Dancing> I want to start my own dance classes?

Question:I have a passion for street dance, but I have never taken it any further.

I would really love to start up my own classes to teach dance to children and teenagers, but I dont know where to start :-}

I assume I cannot just start up the classes without a qualification & insurance, etc... so...

Does anyone know exactly what route I need to take to enable me to do this?

Many thanks

Good luck with your chosen career.

I don't teach dance but I teach kids yoga and meditation.

You would need to be CRB checked first, call local police station first and get that going and find out how you can go about it. I say that because I work in school and this time of year its pretty busy because everyone went back to school in September and there is always a back log. Don't delay it beacause if you are working with kids you are going to really need this.

Once passed, yes u would need the right qualifications, insurance and possibly a first aid course under your belt.

Then just start to advertise. You will get lots of word of mouth but leaflet drop every school, youth club, doctors, etc.

Go to your local press, local bbc tv, local radio and tell them what you are doing. Free PR is best advertising. Offer something to wet their taste buds.

Check out competition and don't under price yourself because if you are too cheap or too expensive, from my experience people will not come.

Oh yeah one last thing, parents paying you. From experience make sure you get a depoist. I'm not teaching u to suck eggs but again from experience if their are boundries put in place they cannot walk over you if they do not pay.
Some people have a cheek and then go nuts when payments are returned unpaid! Get money up front.

Hope I have not scared you too much. I'm self employed and know what it is like.

Good luck with everything and wish you continued success.

Blessed Be

you need to belong to an association, like the aad, idst, from there you need to pass all the exams in one of the subjects, and to the teachers exam in that subject, from there when you pass, you are qualified to teach, find a venue, you need to get building, contents insurance and a prs licence, so you can play the music. hope this helps.

In "Dance Spirit" (the magazine) their were some articles on starting a dance school. I also found some things on the internet...
