Position:Home>Dancing> Urgent Ballet Question?

Question:I've wanted to start ballet for many years now, but haven't had the courage. I'm seventeen, which is kind of old, but I'm not planning on becoming a dancer or anything like that.
I think it would be best for me to find a private teacher so I won't be embarrassed.
I am not flexible or fit, but I'm not fat at all.
What advice would you give me?

You may want to start stretching before you start lessons to increase your flexiblity!
I would work extra hard and do more lessons per week.
It'll be a commitment but it'll be worth it!
Lots of dance studios also have adult beginner classes so you may want to check out some of the studios near where you live for their list of types of classes
Good luck!

Just join a normal class for teenage/adult beginners. Don't be embarrassed, they'll all be beginners too. It'll be great!

The best tips I can give you are:
1. Pointe your feet
2. try and have the best posture you can
3. Tuck in your drawstrings
4. Wear pink tights, always pink tights.
5. Black leotard.
6. The piece of wood along the wall is the barre, and despite popular belief, it is not invincible.
7. Don't keep on sweaters and leg warmers when you go across the floor. Skirts, however, are fine.
8. SPOT!
9. <- this is left, -> this is right. I think.
10. Have fun. Don't psych yourself out. Ballet is amazing.

Ballet for adults is becoming very popular, so don't be embarrassed. Sign up with a class that is just doing it for the exercise. You don't need to have private lessons. Enjoy it.

im seventeen too and my dream is to be in musical theatre i've been wrestling with my mom about it and just now decided to take dance so i can further with my career i take a teen ballet class and i love love love it!!! i hope i will someday be on point but i took ballet mainly to help with other forms of dance i also take a jazz class with fourteen year olds but im learning and having fun so just do it or you'll regret it!!! good luck!

no need to spend extra money on private lessons. see if you can find an adult beginner class in your area. ballet as a form of exercise is terrific ! hope you have fun ! don't be embarrased. those who teach beginners know they don't have experience, and your classmates won't either.

practice whenever you can try to increase your flexibility. Try doing splits and straddles and leads. Dont give up.
