If you're turning out from a knee joint you're putting a lot of stress on the ligaments. Ligaments are not supposed to take that much stress. They might stretch out of their shape permanently. Once that happens you joint can't work properly and can be seriously injured by minor mistakes.

Your knee can work fine when it supports the weight on the same line with the joint. Any other way is bad. If you're turning out from your knee and plie you exert a force on your knees inwards. Knee is not designed to handle this kind of forces repeatedly. This is the worst for your knee, short of hard blows from the side. When you're turning out properly from your hip then the force is downward and in alignment with the bones. That's what bones are for - to support your weight. Don't make your ligaments do the bone's job, it's too much for them.

It is not possible to tell how long will it "take" to do serious damage. Everyone's different. Maybe 2 years, maybe 2 days.

it is not bad as long as you keep your knees over your toes....in other words turn your feet our as well if you are turning your knees out.

it is bad for your knees. it twists your knees anytime you have your feet turned out. i injured myself this way. i would be in first postion adn just get a pain in my knees. take your foot, extend it in front of you, and completely turn out from your hip and place it back on the ground. this way your body will learn to turn out from your hip not your knees. hope this helped!

Well for 2 years...that is quite bad!!! You see you knees were not ment to stand that amount of turnout, so here are some of the results...
1. knee joint or muscle pain
2. truble walking straight
3. knee cap permentley moved
If you experience any of the above contact you doctor
Here are some ways to help your knees (they need it)...
1. Heat or Ice packs (put on knee)
2. massage knee and around it
3. NEVER TURN OUT FROM YOU KNEES AGAIN ALWAYS TURN OUT FORM YOU HIPS
4. Talk to you dance teacher about it
I hope you recover!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What happens is that you will develop Patella Femoral Syndrome. Google that phrase to learn all about it. Add the word "dance" to see how it affects dancers. Essentially, all plies will be very painful, which is the basic move in dance.

Remember, it's not just how long you've been turning out incorrectly, but how much time per week you spend dancing.

The main muscle that controls turn-out is called the piriformis muscle, which is in the lower pelvis. That's the area you need to focus on to produce proper turn-out that will line up your knees over your feet.
