yes, of course, you have to stretch a lot. if you want to be able to get your legs to a full split position without the aid of the floor or a partner (in jumps and layouts and such), you actually have to be able to go past a split position on the floor. use props to lift your feet and ankles off the floor and extend your stretch. start small -- pillows, rolled up sweatshirts, etc -- and work up to higher props. i usually sit on the floor with one leg stretched out along the floor and the other up on a chair, which works well for me now but definitely took some time and effort.
always think of your stretch as extending from deep inside your hip, not in your thigh. consciously relax your muscles as you stretch. many people make the mistake of tensing up (usually because they're afraid of injuring themselves), which makes everything harder and more painful. as always, be gentle to your body. to avoid injury, find the balance between what stretches and what hurts, and don't cross that line.
A full split will take a while so be patient because you don't want to hurt yourself ( most commonly: pull your hamstring).
Here are some tips:

1. gradually STRETCH, STRETCH, STRETCH!!!!
2. Muscle relaxation exercises
3. Lots of warm water time. i.e: Spa or Jacuzzi or a really hot bath :)
4. YOGA!! YOGA!!! YOGA!!!!

*Note: Stretching while in the warm water does wonders!
