Unless you are just wanting to sit in a "semi i don't feel like trying" kind of split. You have to keep your hips square and your legs turned out. (that means front knee UP and back knee down)

Look at these people's splits:

These two pictures the correct way to do a split. yes is bad...b/c u either do it n u do it right or u juzz shouldn't do it at all....
u should try to do it without lettin ur baq knee rest ... n lil by lil u'll get it right....
but if u keep on doin it wit ur knee restin u'll get used to dat n juzz keep on doin it d wrong way....sry
hope i helped!! yes deff put your knee on the floor if you hold it up you are contracting the muscle and you cant stretch it all the way. also try to keep your leg warm when you stretch!! so you dont pull something. if you have more q just aim me misssthing22 unless youre doing the strattle splits, your back leg should be on the ground, otherwise youre not doing it right! so yeah its supposed to be on the ground, good luck! :D i understand what youre saying, like should you keep the back leg straight if you cant get the whole leg down. theoretically it sounds good, but youll get a better stretch if you let the knee hit the ground WHILE continuing to try to slide farther. the farther you go, eventually that knee will have to be on the floor, just make sure it isnt bent like in a jazz split I have seen many other dancers do it that way however it would be easier on the knee if you turned out the back and the front leg while doing the splits.
