Question:

Company / Competition help ? (auditioning)?

I'm 14 years old and this is my 11th year dancing at a dance studio. From the ages 3 - 6 I did ballet and tap, but at the age of 7 all the way to 13, I did only jazz. I'm addicted lol. Now that my mom can afford it, I am also taking tap and ballet again, in addition to the jazz. (it's harder getting back into ballet then you would think ! lol.) Anyway, at the end of the summer for next year's classes, do you think I could audition for company/competition? It requires one year of ballet, tap, and jazz. It starts when you're younger and I haven't done it. Do you think they will allow newcomers at my age? Do I stand a chance? (I personally don't think I'm that good, but whatever, I still want to. It's addicting, dance. )I'll probabaly ask one of my instructers towards the end of the year as well. In addition, next year when I have 1 credit of pool/gym at my high school, I can swtich gym for dance ! yay ! hah.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: At my company that is very normal. Usually they will look for potential. If you improve a lot this year your instructors will know that and ask you to join because they will expect that you will improve even more in company. Our company is mostly jazz based, and you get to pick which types of dance you perform after you try out.
Joining company is a huge commitment here, you are expected to take your regular level classes plus all company classes, rehersals and stretch and turn every day. Here that adds up to about 5 hours 4 days a week.
You will improve alot in company...so work your butt off this year to get there. Listen to everything your teachers critique and then fix it. dont let it happen again!
Good Luck! My friend's studio only takes seniors for the competition/company, thought last year they took two companies to competition.
Though if you qualify to audition, why not? If you get on, that' absolutely great, but if you don't you'll have audition experience the next time you go to audition for company, and that's always good.
And that's sooo lucky with being able to switch gym for dance, I wish my school would do that! We don't have a studio in our school though, and I haven't danced since I was 7 :(
