Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: To tell the truth, maybe you should consider listening to the people who tells you not to do it. I have been dancing for 12 years, and has also taught many classes, and I can tell you that it is not very likely that you'd benefit from those instructional DVDs. Mayhaps you might learn to recognize certain positions, and certain exercises, but without a teacher beside to guide you, you won't know whether you're even standing correctly!

Posture is a very important thing, and that is one thing you can't learn from looking at the dancers in the videos. Often we do not know what we are doing wrong until people point out our mistakes. Also, to get the right technique, you must also know how to use the right muscles. I have seen students, even with the guide of the teachers, till now still do not truly understand the use of the different muscles in their thighs, and due to the misuse of muscles, they are developing huge thighs, with no improvement to their technique.

Ballet classes are very affordable nowadays, maybe you should consider taking them, instead of learning from instructional CDs/DVDs. And it is always better to learn in a classful of students, there is always the competitive spirit which makes you strive to be better, and also the opportunity to discuss among yourselves the exercises to further improve. A DVD by an established dancer or teacher could help you get started. You are quite right about point work - first you need to develop the supporting technique (and muscles), then you need to work with a teacher.

A CD that tells you how to do it - stay away; A DVD where you can see the examples and follow them -not ideal, but better than nothing. as long as you don't do pointe, you shouldnt get hurt. you may not learn as much from a CD or a DVD as you would from a teacher that can watch you dance, but you should still be able to try. if you want corrections from a real teacher to help you get better, search "Online Ballet Tutor" on you tube...or just click on the link...http://www.youtube.com/results?search_qu...

Former San Francisco Ballet Soloist Alexi Zubiria demonstrates a combination, and you can try to learn it yourself, film yourself doing it and upload to youtube or danceprofile and you will get tips and corrections from a pro. http://www.danceprofile.com/
