Question:

Proper age to start Pointe?

I'm 15. I've had some ballet experience, but I was told that girls need to start Pointe at a young age in order to gain the technical qualities of it. I was wondering what those qualities were and if this theory is correct. Is 15/16 too old to start Pointe? I would love to have a career in dance, many people have told me "The dancin' business is for girls who have danced since they could walk.". I'm not askin' for the Business qualities of starting Pointe young, I'm talking about the Medical qualities of doing so.

Ballet is a beautiful dance Pointe or Flat, I'm just wondering why the professionals raise such a stink when they hear girls over 13 wanting to start Pointe and become professional. Is it hopeless for older girls to start ballet/pointe and still have hope in being successful? Or is it really a goal that only 5-yr-olds have access to?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I started pointe when I was in 8th grade...so 13. I think the youngest most instructors/teachers will let you start is about 11. You can't start to early because if your still growing your ankles might not be strong enough and you could end up hurting yourself.

15 is defintally not to old! Don't ever let people tell you it's to late to do something. Your never to old to start something new. Plus you will never know if you can do it or not unless you go out and try it! But please make sure that your instructor/teacher things your strong enough for this because like I said if your doing pointe and your ankles aren't strong enough you could get hurt...and that would stink.

Good luck! Dream big and never let anybody tell you otherwise! Source(s):
Dancing for 14 years (tap, jazz, ballet, pointe).
Teaching assistant for 4 years. No wayyy..
And how old was this young age, because they are wrong...
The age you are ready for point is around 12 or 13...

Of course you can do pionte if you have more than a year experiance of ballet...

Any age is great.. okay first of all whoever told you it is best to start pointe young is not a professional or doesn't have their dancers' best interest at heart. A dancer should only begin pointe when her ankles are strong enough to handle it. Young girls who start pointe are much more susceptible to injury. so about 12 or 13 really is the best age. Second, i believe if you are passionate enough about anything then you can make up for lost time, but you'll have to be willing to work extremely hard to go pro. And if you decide you don't want your entire life to revolve around ballet, that's okay too. Dance because you love it, try a different studio and ask about their ballet and pointe classes, chances are they won't turn you down. good luck! :) Wow! I do ballet too! I've been doing ballet since was thre. Their is no exact age to start pointe. You start pointe when you are ready too, when your ankles and legs are strong enough. I didn't start pointe untill I was least 14. That was when my ballet teacher said I was ready. Of course you can still become a proffesional ballet dancer still! 15 and 16 years old is a time where a quite a few of my ballet friends started their pointe. Generally a 5 year old would not start pointe because they would not have strong enough ankles for it and they would still be getting the basics of ballet. I started pointe in Grade 5 and I could have gone proffestional. So go for it, ask another studio, find a ballet teacher there, they will put you on the right track and live life to the fufil with Ballet! It's really bad for your feet to go on pointe at a young age. I think you have to be over 12. going up on pointe isnt decided by age. its decided by how strong your legs and most importantly your ankles. think about it. you're standing on one-two toes, would you want weak ankles not supporting you? anyways your instructor should tell you when you're ready. to strengthen your ankles do releves while brushing your teeth or waiting line. keep you heels towards the front. You don't NEED to be young to start pointe, the youngest you could start is 10, AND that is ONLY if your ankles are strong enough. Most people start at 12 or 13, which is when I started. I am in a Beginner Pointe Class, and the ages in it are 12-16, and SOME of those people are on demi-pointe still. I'd say your never too old to start Pointe. And there are some people who haven't danced since they could walk, yet are still famous. I started when I was only about..7 or so.
