im 13 and might do a jazz class soon It probably depends on your current flexibility, age, and dance training but the main thing I can tell you is to PRACTICE. I am a dancer and have been for about 12 years, and my kicks greatly improved this summer. Basically, I worked on technique at home. If you are a jazz dancer or ballerina, you know about keeping hips square, legs straight, controlling turnout/turn in, pointing your feet, keeping your back tall, and eyes up. If not, try to work on those things first without pushing the height of your kicks. It will be a lot easier and safer for your body if you have solid technique. Every time you set aside time to do this, practice doing splits. This increases the flexibility of muscles vital to getting higher kicks. After you are pretty confident with your whole body, try holding onto something (i.e. a ballet barre, immobile chair, pole, wall) and focusing on your leg. Make sure you use what you practiced before with your body's stability. Just stick with it and try to remember to practice a little bit every day. (I practiced for like 3-10 mins a day and saw an improvement within a week, but that may just be me.) Keep practicing and, sooner or later, you will see an improvement! It sounds like a lot of work, but after you know how the kick is "supposed to feel", stretching and time are the only real things you can put into it.
GOOD LUCK! Do your splits alot. Like ALOT! lol. If you sleep in your splits (I know it sounds dumb) you get better sooo much faster! And make sure when you do your kicks you hold your center up and all that stuff.
