Position:Home>Dancing> Is there a general dance class?

Question:

Is there a general dance class?

like, not specific like salsa or ballroom. I guess hip hop would be closest to what I'm looking for. I mean, a class where you could learn to move in a way that might be useful when going out to a club, or dancing at a party.

I am kinetically quite stupid and can't pick up stuff from just watching people informally. I think I need remedial attention by taking a class where someone will break it up for me piece by piece and we all practice it. what kind of class would this be? what would it be called? basic movement? does anyone have specific places to recommend in new york/northern nj?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Some ballroom studios, especially in the US, offer classes in nightclub, hip hop, etc. (and almost all in salsa). There are a few foot position differences between ballroom and ballet, for instance, but all the formal dances (as opposed to street dances) teach essentially the same basics, because they are basic: if you're standing with your weight on your right foot, your left foot can move back, forward, or to the side, or on a diagonal. That's BASIC. The rest is built from there. A few beginner classes will get you going. A lot of people think they're going to learn tricks and fancy moves from day one. Put your preconceptions aside, as they'll be wildly off, and check it out. By the way, many studios offer a really inexpensive beginner package that's perfect for you to sample. I'd try beginner American ballroom and hip hop for starters, in that order.
