Question:

Why some people cannot dance?

I have a theory about why some people suddenly lose the beat; head, neck, hips and knees each move to a different timing.

People who can dance move to the bass or the drums or the most constant sound.

People who can't listen and move to the violin or high pitched intermittent sound.

When the pitch stops they jerk out of time and cannot regain the rhythm.

Those who are ok admitting to the 'affliction' , please tell me if I'm on track. Thanks.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: You have a nice scientific hypothesis that should be fairly easy to test. If the pitch of the music is your only variable, then you can take groups of dancers and non-dancers and subject them to music of various pitches and study the results of their dancing.

As an aside, dance instructors have known for centuries to emphasize steady beats for their beginner (and even advanced) students. Many rehearsals, even of professional dance troupes, practice dance steps to a single drum or other cadence-metering device in the absence of all other music. This type of training is most evident in flamenco dance where rhythms are dynamic and require tremendous discipline to master.
