Question:

How do you pick pointe shoes that actually fit?

I already bought three pairs this year, I just started and its really frusterating to not be able to dance because of bad shoes. The first ones I got were gamba's, and they were too big. Then I got glissers (capezios) and they were too small. I thought I got the perfect ones, but apparently there too big on one of my feet (ones bigger then the other), and my foots too wide for the top of the shoe. I need someone who has done this before to help, I'm so lost. How can you tell what fits, because apparently I can't.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I understand your frustration as I had similar problems when I first began pointe. My first suggestion to you would be to have your dance instructor accompany you when going to purchase pointes. If that isn't a possibility, then I would have your instructor examine your feet to determine what brand and type of pointe shoe would be best for you. Personally, I prefer the Russian Pointe brand as well as the infamous Gaynor-Mindens. These brands offer a wide range of styles to choose from. For a beginner pointe student I would also recommend trying Freed.
Also, keep in mind that the fit of the pointe shoe(with padding) should not cause your toes to overlap or be unbearably crowded and neither should it feel like the shoe is too wide. To check for proper length of the shoe stand en releve and have the shoe fitter or your teacher pinch the fabric at the heal. Any excess fabric of approximately an inch or more will tell you that the shoe does not fit properly. There are many aspects to getting pointe shoes that fit your needs(length and hardness of shank, width of box and platform, and the height of the vamp just to name a few). Above all have patience and make sure that every time you get new pointe shoes to have them professionally fitted and if something feels wrong to you don't be afraid to speak up. Good luck and break a leg!
