Can Salsa music be danced 'apart' from ones partner, or does it have to be together?

If not how can one become a better "follower" with their leader/male partner?

Any tips?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: It can be danced apart, in fact, some figures demand it, at least for a few moments. Usually, the follow simply stays with the beat of the music and mimics what the lead is doing, sometimes it will be a bar later, such as half turns (like in cha-cha).
