Question:

What style of dance is best for a beginning 5 year old girl?

My 5 year old daughter would love to do Ballet. My husband and I are reluctant because of the cost involved and being so young we think she may change her mind in a few weeks- as she often does. I was wondering if it would be best to let her do a Jazz class for 1 term and then if she wants- let her do ballet. I am new to dance myself and do not really know what to do. Any Suggestions?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I would recommend ballet and tap first because they are good solo dances, are fairly common, form the basis for many other dance styles and usually require an early start to excel.
If she falls in love with ballet, let her continue. If not, you should expose her to solo jazz, which is the basis for a lot of swing/lindy as well as musical theater dances.
Then when she is a bit older, and if she wants to, she can pick up ballroom dancing or swing or hip-hop or modern. Any of those will come very easily to someone who has had a couple years of ballet, tap and jazz.
I mainly do swing dancing but also do ballroom. I can instantly tell if a newbie to swing has done ballroom, or if my new partner has had ballet (she is really good at spinning).
