Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: You have a lot of misperceptions about the structure of dance education at the post-secondary or college level in the U.S. There are three basic kinds of dance schools:

1) Pre-professional dance schools train children up to adults. They don't offer any kind of degree or certificate; they just prepare dancers for a professional career.
2) Dance conservatories are non-academic training programs that offer a certificate.
3) College dance programs offer a B.A. or B.F.A. to students who major in dance.

To get into any college dance program, you must have at least several years of solid ballet training. To get into the better college dance programs, you must be at the advanced levels in ballet. This is because ballet is the foundation of most western forms of dance. Most college programs place their primary focus on training modern dancers while also making their students continue taking ballet. A few programs do it the other way around, with the primary focus on ballet. A few other programs include a third focus in jazz or musical theater dance.

You will never find a college that offers a focus in hiphop. It is considered to be a part of jazz, but even in the programs that offer a jazz concentration, it is very rare to find any classes offered in hiphop, even as an elective. My daughter, who attends one of the triple-emphasis programs, learns hiphop outside of class by being part of a hiphop club. Of course, many colleges, whether they offer a major in dance or not, will have student clubs or teams that do hiphop. (Or, at least they do now. Hiphop might be out of fashion in 6 years. Who knows?)

In order to get a scholarship to a college dance program, you would need to be taking ballet classes several times a week right now and become one of the best dancers in your local area. Since you haven't expressed an interest in ballet, please feel free to pursue other interests that can lead to a variety of majors in college, and then do hiphop for fun through a club or team. Above all, focus on getting excellent grades in high school.
