Question:

Starting ballet?

During February i will be starting ballet. If there is any ballet dancers out there could you please tell what it is like. I have heard its very hard but hey everythings hard at first and even might get harder but i am willing to do it. I will be beginning so what type of things do i need to buy to start off. I am waiting for a phone call of the dance academy to tell me more details but until then i would like your advice. What was it like for you just beginning? i am a bit nervous about going on my own and my confidence is very low. My family are very supportive and said i have made a start by actually going to the place and getting a place but still i don't know what it will be like, like making friends. But i really want to do it. What kind of things do you learn first. thanks.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Hey! Good on you for starting ballet. I would suggest that you buy some flat demi shoes, pink ballet tights, a leotard or two, hair net and pins to put your hair in a bun, ballet skirt, black tights/leg warmers (optional) and a throwover/crossover top if you are cold before class. As for ballet when I first started, I found it really difficult because I started in a class where there were girls way more advanced than I was. They were doing harder steps than I was capable of. I was really worried about going back, but I did and that's how I improved heaps.

When beginning ballet, the basic steps you learn are a plie (bending of both knees), tendu (pointing your foot) and basically the 5 ballet positions. Refer to the links below to see the 5 positions.

I would say when doing ballet, think of being graceful and don't think that some steps are too hard for you - try everything, but make sure you always ask your teacher questions about how to do it properly. When I started, I really didn't like my teacher much because she wasn't very nice because I didn't have the ballet figure, but I showed her how much I wanted to improve and what I could do, and she actually like me after a while - that meant a lot to me. As for making friends, you'll surely meet someone who'll make you welcome and talk to you. Good Luck in your ballet classes and I hope you enjoy dancing ballet. Hope this helps. :)
