Position:Home>Dancing> What type of dance is the Tango?

Question:

What type of dance is the Tango?

What is a brief history behind it? Any interesting stories that are attached?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The original dance came from less-than-respectable origins in Buenos Aires (and Montevideo), was changed somewhat when it travelled to France and then Britain just before WW I, and made a loop back to the Americas, reaching some fame with Rudolph Valentino's dancing it on film and the great Carlos Gardel's popularity in the '20's and '30's.
There are actually 3 dances now called tango, the Argentine (which has its own subgroups), the US ballroom style (which, along with foxtrot, waltz and Viennese waltz comprise the "smooth" dances in American ballroom), and Modern Tango (which, along with Slow Foxtrot, Slow Waltz, Viennese Waltz and Quickstep, comprise the Standard dances in International Ballroom).
