Question:

What does Martha [Graham Technique] help to develop and what is the best body to have for it?

Hey guys just appealing to the dance enthusiasts. Graham technique tends to be quite physically demanding especially with alot of the floor exercises, just wondering what it helps to develop, whether it be strength, flexi etc.
And also would it help if you already have paticular body attributes that would aid in doing the exercises with more ease

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Really, you can learn Graham technique with any body type (that's what's so great about modern dance); but it helps if you have a sort of solid, muscular, not-too-tall build (this was Graham's build; she had a simply beautiful body) and strong abdominal muscles. Graham technique focuses primarily on the "contraction," especially the abdominal contraction - using the breath to sort of shrink into oneself, perhaps as though you had been punched in the stomach - and uses sharp, forceful, angular movements. The technique requires a very strong core and an ability to tap into your core strength.

So work on your crunches and Pilates and breathing exercises.
