Question:

Belly Dancing?

How should you go about seriously studying belly dancing? Every place around Los Angeles seems to cater to people who are just doing it because it's trendy. Also, I don't belong to a community where this type of dance is common.

I'm sure there are more but I know these dancers continuously receive high recommendations.
Of course a good instructor is only part of serious study of the art. You should also be looking to supplement your learning by reading various books about the history of bellydance and also the culture from which it comes. This can help you with your interpretation and appreciation of the dance. Reading books on how to do some of the moves or improve technique can often help you improve what you know as well. Learning Arabic or at least key words and phrases can help to understand and interpret songs as well. Listening to Arabic music frequently will help you with musicality and interpretation as well. There are many aspects you should look into if you are really a serious student but this is probably a good place to start. Read some of my previous yahoo answers if you would like to see my condensed list of supplemental learning resources. Or feel free to e-mail me with questions.
