Question:

What is good sketching type of pencil?

I've been drawing since I was around 4 drawing Buzz Lightyear and Woody. Now I've grown into sketching people. I want to get a good pencil to sketch with, I'm not worried about price as long as its below 20$ and i can find at a local arts and craft store?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: You have to know first the pencils are classified by the softness/hardness of the graphite. The softness/hardness gives you different effects on the drawing, the best way to know is to experiment with them.

The hard ones are marked with the letter H and the soft ones are the B.

The scale begins in both sides with the neutral pencil marked HB, is the middle term for both, and is the first I recomend you to buy. Then skip two grades in both sides an bought a 3H and a 3B. Perhaps if you are a little conservative you would prefer a 2H and a 2B, and if you are a little risky take a 4H and a 4B instead.

Try them. The H gives you soft finishes, light gray marks and lines, depending on the paper you use, you could see the H are made for fine lines, for drafting and tracing. The B are for gross lines, and darkers. They are fine to fill big spaces, and to made fading surfaces, to softly made shadows.

The pencils from 6H to 9H are like a Nail ! and the 6B to 9B you must guard them like glass because if it falls the graphite will break inside the pencil and when you sharp them the tip falls again and again until you have an inch pencil.

So learn about them in the HB + 3B + 3H combination first then as they bore you or you finish them buy the other grades and try them.

PS Once I se a portrait made with a 7H it was so beautiful made. I never could make something laike that but I don't denny it is possible, even more since I saw it !

Thank you in advance for giving me the ten points jajaja ;) just kidding
