What do U think of this Storyline for a Novel?

A cop comes home to his apartment one night after finishing his work shift to find that his wife and young son have been butchered to death. He spends his every waking hour to find the killer, he and his colleagues soon catch the killer and he is put on trial for the murders. However to his shock the killer is deemed mentally ill and is therefore sent to a mental institute instead of life in prison.
The killer is released after 24 months and the cop is determined to get his revenge. He tracks down the killer and beats him to a pulp but then the killer confesses that the killings were ordered from higher up, a powerful politian. We then follow our lead character as he tries to find out who ordered the killing of his family and why, with suprising twists and turns.

Its a sci-fi thriller with some noir thrown in kind of like a cross between BladeRunner and Minority Report.

Ireland there is another lead character in the story who is a female and she is as tough if not tougher than the male character. This is just the basic plot i outlined I have a more detailed storyline fleshed out already.

There is more to this than I have outlined and its kind of metaphysical too. And it is the lead female who has a mysterious past. The guy eventually learns to accept the death of his wife and kid and joins with the female lead to partake in something greater involving the future of the world.

I want the lead character to be a cop because thats the best way I think I can get the reader to become involved with the world I have created, and all the dark crevices that this future world has.

To see the light one must recognise what is dark?
