Question:

Has anyone read Pledged?

Has anyone read "Pledged: The secret life of sororities?" I just want some feedback on it before I buy.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I read it. It actually made me pretty angry. I'm in a sorority and I feel like it just makes harsh generalizations to the whole greek system that aren't true. Yeah, some of it may be true for the schools that she visited but they are definitely not true for all sororities.

If you're looking for something for pure entertainment, the stories of the characters that the author follows are semi-entertaining, although I don't think they are any more entertaining than a reality TV show and definitely not as entertaining as a good book.

If you're looking to buy it for accurate information about sororities, you won't find it in there. She sounds like she knows what she's talking about but she only generalizes and her information isn't well supported with actual, reliable sources. In fact, she has detailed information on many chapters rituals, which are NEVER supposed to be known by ANYONE not in the chapter. My chapter has some ritual in there and it's not even accurate!!

If you're one of the many people that like to think that being in a sorority is just one drama-filled, drug-ridden, oversexed party, then this might be a good book for you for that fantasy, but it's not actually the "secret life" of us sorority girls. I know many of them, from different chapters and different schools and that is NOT the life that we lead. I think it's interesting how she only includes the parts of the girls' lives that perpetuate the myth of the classic "sorority girl" and not the parts that show the true benefits, or the love involved in sisterhood.

Bottom line: I defintely wouldn't waste my money on it. If you really really have to read it, go to a library, just don't believe everything she says.
