Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I would go with GERCHAK being Polish based on all of the GERCHAKS on the Ellis Island Database, who were from Poland. It is possible that they could have lived in the Czech Republic, however. Many Poles, especially if they lived close to the southern border found themselves emigrating to Hungary and Czechoslovakia before arriving in the U.S. Today, those countries are known as the Czech Republic, Slovakia (Slovak Republic) and Hungary.
