Question:

Poem: When You Look at Me (what do you think comments always appreciated)?

There was a question today where the person was asking for a poem about a teenage crush where the girl liked the guy but she was shy and didn't feel particularly pretty. She knew that the guy was checking her out and she had similar feelings.

That gave me the idea for this poem that I just wrote. I didn't want to post it to the question. I just used it to get creative. Please let me know if you think it works at all? Thanks.

When You Look at Me

I hate it when you look at me,
across this room, in front of everyone.
Look away. There??s nothing to see,
and no one should see you
looking.

You can??t think I??m pretty.
You can??t.
My lips are too thin.
My hips are too wide.
There are so many things
that you can??t see when
you look at me.
You make me want to hide
inside myself.

If only we could get away
Why can??t you understand?
I can??t have you looking
at me
like that.
When all I want to do is hold
you down
my gaze tasting
taking in everything.

I hate it when I look at you.

Priyanka: I do appreciate your point--I don't agree with it, but it did make me think--so thank you. There are plenty of poems and books out there where women write about what's going on in the minds of men (too many to list)--are they being sexist, even in a light way. Isolation, pain, doubt are all part of the human condition regardless of gender, race, etc. I can understand what the narrator is feeling because I have felt that in some way--many, many times. It is my contention that so has everyone else. Of course, you are free to disagree with me, but I would encourage you to think through the ramifications of your position. That said, thank you for making me consider this point.

Rylee's Mom: I haven't read it yet. I checked your profile and didn't see anything open. I'd love to read it--maybe e-mail me a link to it.
