Question:

Consonance??

I need help finding consonance in "The Bells". Find 2 examples of consonance in "The Bells" by edgar allan poe. Thank you.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Consonance means more than the repetition of consonants, it means the expression of sounds (sonance) which go along with (con) the picture they describe in the poem. When you see the poem do you hear bells ringing? What are the words and sounds that produce this effect? Assonance is the dulling or absence of this effect, countering or contradicting it. It, too is produced by consonants, but instead of sounding alike they sound different, producing a partial rhyme in which the vowels are same but consonants differ as tale, make, late, tape. Consonance can be produced by vowels as well, as in Baa, baa, black sheep have you any wool? Yes sir, yes sir three bags full. Note the repetition of the -a- and -ee- sounds which mimic the bleating of sheep. Poe used assonance in his poem The Raven. The Raven has a similar effect in its alliterative sibilance . But there's a finality in the assonance of ,"Quoth the Raven, Nevermore."

There are different types of bells in this poem, are there sounds which help you identify and distinguish each of them? What kind of bell goes tinkle, tinkle, tinkle? What kind of bell makes the deeper, slower sound of moon or drum(ming)? the liquid sounds which repeat in Bells, bell, bells? You see none of these end in r,r,r or d,d,d or b,b,b or g,g,g ( a different sound from Ng,Ng,ng). It is not mere repetition of consonants, it is the value and sound of the letters being repeated. Think of Frere Jacques, or Are You Sleeping, Brother John, Ding, dong, ding, or bim, bim, bim, BOM!

Your first answerer is way off base and knows NOTHING about poetry onomatopoeia refers to single words which sound like the thing they name, not words which suggest the sounds of what they picture. This poem has no words like that. Consonance in poetry is words sounding together to make a picture. If you doubt this simply look at the poem, you will readily find there the effect I describe. Help which your first answerer in her priggish manner doesn't offer.
