Question:

DId the U.S. really send Matthew C. Perry to Japan in 1850, a period when the U.S. was having their civil war?

I have been reading this book about Japan History but when I compared it to the United States History I read few months back, I sense some clashing (or is there really a clash?) This book claims that Japan had their first visit from the U.S. in 1850++ from a man named Matthew C. Perry. But what I read few months back was that the U.S. only started their imperialism in the early 20th century, and during mid 19th century the U.S. was facing the civil war under the presidency of Abraham Lincoln.

So did the U.S. really send Matthew to Japan when they were waring?

So the U.S. did send Matthew to Japan! I was doubting it because I didn't come across any overseas voyage prior to the early 19th century in the U.S. History book i read (erm.. it was SAT2 U.S. History, i guess it's not so comprehensive anyway). Well... maybe i just need to read more. Can anyone recommend any U.S. history text for a foreign student?

Thx guys!
