Question:

Steampunk, Cyberpunk, Clock-workpunk, etc.punk book titles and authors?

I never read any of these books, but the theme looks interesting. I'd very much appreciate it if you could give me some titles and authors. :-]

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: fractal mama's given you some great answers, those are some of the big names for cyberpunk, and I'd go to China Mi㩶ille right now for steampunk, of anyone. PERDIDO STREET STATION, for a start. There's also Ian MacLeod's HOUSE OF STORMS, Blaylock's HOMUNCULOUS (both are amazing).

Cyberpunk is about generally dystopian worlds or parts of the world, where technology and biology mesh inextricably. It can be either near or far future, but it emphasizes the effects of machine on humans directly, and where lines between the two can blur.

Steampunk is science fiction and fantasy elements set around the steam age, where steam was *the* technology, and there was a similar boom to the digital age, and a kind of wonder of the "magic" of what that technology could do. HG Wells, Jules Verne... they're the original steam punk guys. Think of the "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," for example. Or "Journey to the Center of the Earth," or "The Time Machine." That kind of thing.

As far as I know, clockwork punk is a musical style, not a literary one.

There's been a lot of cyberpunk and steampunk in the genre magazines in the last decade. PIck up a copy of Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, or Fantasy and Science Fiction.
