Question:

Canon EOS 30D for the amateur photographer?

Do you guys think this would be a good camera for an amateur photographer? If not do you have any better recommendations?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The EOS 30D is an excellent camera for the amateur. But then it all depends on how amateur you are.

If you are an advanced amateur then it's excellent, but if you are just starting out in photography then it could be a very daunting camera.

If you're just starting out in photography then I would recommend the 400D. It's what is known as entry level cameras and are excellent for just about any form of photography.

The only advantages of the 30D over the 400D are:
1. The 30D has spot metering (3%)
2. You can push the ISO sensitivity up to 3200 (the 400D is 1600)
3. There are more image perameters (which you would likely never use if you shoot in RAW.
4. 5 frames per second burst rate.

The 400D has the advantage of:
1. Higher resolution (10.1 against 8.3).
2. Self-cleaning sensor.

Hope this helps
