Question:

What books/novels would you recommend to a 10th grader?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Anything that makes you think and (most importantly) that you enjoy!

That said, here are a few that I like:

The Ender Series, by Orson Scott Card. Set in the near future (at first). Sort of sci-fi, but he doesn't get bogged down with that. It's still fundimentally about people and things things people do to each other. Very heavily into weird ethical ideas, but it's cool to read.

Anything by Charles De Lint. Blends fantasy with modern day urban living. Even the internet is magic. Very cool and very smooth writing. His characters are really awesome, you find yourself really caring about what happens to them. The cool thing is that they make mistakes, too. So they're not perfect.

Terry Prachett. Fantasy again, but it's a satirical fantasy. He's making complete fun of everything when he writes these. It's hysterical and doubly so when you realize he's poking fun at say the post office, or traffic control or cell phones or something. Really really good reads. Really. Can't say enough about this guy.

The Alienist, by Caleb Carr. The first time psychology was used in tracking down a serial killer. It's fiction, yeah, but it's written well enough that it sounds like history! Murder, adventure, mystery and controversy all set in turn of the century (late 1800's) New York. Really good read!

And now I'm done sounding like a book commercial. ;)
