Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Quite a few questions have ben asked about Hardy recently- particularly this one- it would be worth using the search field. The passage above is purely descriptive using everyday language and everyday associations. This passage can readily be contrasted with the first page of Hardy's novel which is witten in a poetic style using simile, metaphor, personification and words with double meanings- that is why it is "literary" Examples: the cloud cover is like a "tent"- simile; the word "instalment" in the second paragraph has more than one meaning (something being put in place and an early payment of a piece of night). Personification: the "face" of the heath. Just think of the contrasts between common language and that of the great writers and you will appreciate what literary means |
