Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Just keep in mind that at the height of Shakespeare's popularity while he was alive, next door to the Globe was a bear-baiting arena the always drew a larger crowd.

So as popular as he was, he was not the most popular entertainment of the day.

How come you don't ask this question about Homer? Or Virgil? Or Dante? They've all been in print much longer than old Will.
