I have read a book "the minister black veil" written by Nath. Hawthorne. I need help to understand it

I was told that the book is an allegory. An allegory of what? or whom?. I need some help. Some links I have search talk about the black veil being a symbol of the sins that human beings commit. By the way Pilgrim progress is also another allegory. Could you please help thanks
