What is the position of the splits?

i want to be able to do the left side split, but i dont know the right position. is the back foot supposed to be sideways? if it is is the whole leg sideways? i would appreciate a website with a easy diagram

I DONT KNOW WHICH ANSWER IS RIGHT! i have some answers that seem reasonable where you turn out your legs, but one answer says you dont, and it sounds convincing. i think i will leave it to voting
