Why do we have such 'dark holes' in our family trees!?

I am currently searching for my mother in laws anchesters! Boy why am I putting my self through this!!
I am now currently stuck..... grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! Any good family tree experts?! I could do with some good answers!! x
