Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I urge you to persevere and delve into that first chapter, because once you are into this novel you will be hooked. Once you are past the first chapter and into the flashback, you will find that It is about two young boys, Gene and Phineas (Finny), who share a room at school. Gene, an introvert, finds it easy to study and is academic, whereas Finny is athletic and extremely extrovert. Finny is also very popular and gung-ho, and this engenders a slow-burning jealousy within Gene.

The book, through flashback, follows their entwined schooldays and the tragedy that befalls Finny through his friend Gene. Gene later suffers strong pangs of guilt - culminating in a deep appreciation of his friend following another tragedy (I don't want to spoil this for you).

I have provided a link to a permitted study guide for this novel, which I think you will find useful.

Please read the book ... it is well worth the effort.
