Question:

What generation am I?

My parents emmigrated here, and I was born here, so what am I; 1st or 2nd generation? Also, if someones parents emmigrated somewhere in the 1600s, would that make the naturalized last generations something like a 8th or 9th generation something? Can you say 'I am 6th generation something?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: You are a first generation citizen of your country. Your parents were not born in that country, therefore although they may have become citizens of the country, they have produced the first generation of their family in that country- you.
Yes, if you have had x number of generations of your family born in the country before yourself, you may say you are a whatever generation of that country. But it seems a bit silly to say that!
A note to other posters- we are not all Americans here!
