Sitar: Why do my sympathetic strings keep snapping?

A couple of them snap before or as they reach tuning. Most of them also seem like they are ready to while in tune. Why is that? Also, my 7 strings are in tune and i'm pretty sure my sympathetic strings are in tune, but i don't get that sitar effect and the resonance that it is supposed to give off. What can i do to solve these problems?

Sounds as if the strings aren't very high quality for one thing, and it depends on whether you bought them at the same store or if you have a cheaper replacement. Whatever, you need to speak to someone who is fully knowledgeable about the instrument. I know for a fact that there are people working in some of these places who've never played an instrument.
