Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Read the book ages ago in it's first American printing. It seemed to be the 1300/1400 version of Sherlock Holmes. Rose petals were crushed and made into "Rosaries" to remember to say one's prayers. The rose petals are in the past but the tradition remains. Very convoluted inspite of the simplicity of the times. Humberto Eco probably had a different take because the Church had so many symbolic meanings for Rose.
