Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Traveling with instruments can always be a little scary but it shouldn't damage it if you pack it right.

Call your airline and see if they will allow you to take it as a carry-on. If they will then you don't have much to worry about and you need not read further than this. Just loosen your strings

BUT If they won't allow it as a carry on then you just need to pack it right.

I play the cello and have traveled on many occasions with my orchestra and have never had a problem.

Here's a basic break down of what we do to ensure they don't break:
1. loosen all your strings!!!!
2. get a hard case so it has a protective shell
3. pack your guitar into the hard case using soft foam. You could get it at any craft store or fabric store. - its like the stuff you can put down under sleeping bags for camping or something
4. make sure your case will stay shut if it has to go through with luggage
5. Ask them to hand carry it and print out a sign to tape on to the case so the luggage handlers know its an instrument and it needs to be hand carried.
