What is the name of the gary paulsen novel about a kid named Sam Bass from new england?

i read this book when i was about 10, and i cannot remember the name of it. it was about a man with steely gray eyes and a cliff and this kid would hide over the ledge of it. the kids father lived in oklahoma and sam went and stayed with him. the dad was a photographer, and had his own darkroom. if anyone has any idea what the name is i would appreciate it very much. thanks
