Question:

Anyone tell me how to draw a perfect oval?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Either a stencil OR (are you ready for this one?), pencil and paper in hand and I will walk you through this freehand oval technique. This is a lengthy process when writing it out and not having a drawing to guide you, but stay with me on this.
On the paper draw an X axis going from left to right (horizontally) and Y axis top to bottom (vertical). These are also know as major and minor axis. Make the X axis 6 inches and cross it in the center with a Y axis that is 4 inches. Good it so far? Just a cross on the paper with the X axis longer than the Y axis. Next draw a box around the entire cross where the ends of each line touch the edges of the box. A 6" x 4" box with a cross in it.
Next, draw diagonals from box corner to corner. Pretty much a cross with an X over it in a 6" x 4" box.
Now, only on these diagonals, from the center of the crosses to the corner of the boxes, divide the line into 1/3's. Put little tic marks to show the 1/3's. Do all 4 diagonal lines the same way. (Only the diagonals, not the vertical and horizontals)
Next, starting at the 12 o'clock position (the upper Y axis line) where the Y axis touches the top of the box, start drawing clockwise. Your next dot to connect will be the OUTER 1/3 tic mark (you only have 2 tic marks to chose from on each diagonal line) of the top right arm of the X, then keep drawing to the 3 o'clock position until your line touches the X axis on the edge of the box. Continue on around in the same fashion: edge of the box, outer 1/3 of the diagonal, edge of the box, outer 1/3 etc. This will need to be a gentle flowing line with a gradual curve throughout and you will see the oval appear. With a bit of practice and an artistic eye, you will achieve a smooth oval of any size (determined by an X and Y axis, also called major and minor axis). Let me know if it works for you.
