Question:

What does this sentence mean in Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell?

He's talking about the children in Jesus' day memorizing the Torah because they couldn't have their only copy of it because the printing press hadn't been invented. Then in parenthesis it says: "When you stayed at a hotel in Jesus' day, the Gideons hadn't gotten there first."

What does that mean? Is it supposed to be funny or something?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The Gideons are a fraternal organization that distributes free Bibles. In a great many hotels in America (and other places, too) you will find that every room has a Gideons Bible in the desk drawer or a dresser drawer.

So, yes, it's a joke.
