A couple of suggestions for you- if "your" McDaniels line was in Missouri in the late 1800's. one place for you to work might be the 1880 census index that is part of www.familysearch.org. Using that, you can search just the surname of McDaniels, in the state of Missouri. I am going to predict there will be a lot of them. The 1880 census is the first where the person listed will give their birthplace, but ALSO the place of birth of their parent (s).
Please forgive me if I am wrong in this, but what it seems you MAY have, is a preliminary family tradition that your McDaniels family is Irish and settled in Missouri. The problem with such traditions (and many of us start with the same) is that it is probably not backed up by any original documentation. Or, as happened in one of my lines... the family was presumed "Irish".. but when the specifics were tracked down, it was the wife's lineage (a totally different surname) that came from Ireland. The "surname" belonged to the husband, whose ancestry comes from England.
Rather than spend months, trying to locate a set of circumstances that might be inaccurate... my suggestion is that you might post more exact details on what you are looking for. Such as.. where was John McDaniel, and his parents? He was born about <fill in the blank>. This is the best way for any volunteer to distinguish your relative, from others who might have the exact same name.
It is also helpful if you have made sure that you have "worked" everything available from more recent records.. ie death certificate, siblings, etc... something that is likely to narrow down your search to a particular county in Missouri. From that, you can zero in on exact documentation, and see what it indicates.
