Can there be, "First Annual Reunions and Picnics?"?

Can there be, "First Annual Reunions and Picnics?"?

I've always thought it was somewhat comical how some events are stated as " First Annual". Should it be stated this way?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: i've noticed that phrase too, and it gives me pause. first annual implies two things, that it is the first such event ever held, and that it is held every year. can it be both?

it is optimistic in its outlook. but what if no-one attends the first? will they still hold a second?

(maybe the first non-annual one was rained out.)
