Question:

Can someone explain the etiquette of filming a movie in public?

I'm about to begin filming a documentary,

do i need a permit to film in certain places?

am I allowed to show other people not involved with the projected on the film?

what are the basic rules to keep me away from any possible lawsuits or incarceration?

thanks for your help,

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: It depends on where you are - country city etc. If you know when and where you are going to be shooting it makes sense to contact them to ask for permission or see if they have any special rules. This is important when shooting in government buildings, shopping malls, etc. Some people will not allow you to shoot on private property in case you are scoping their security cameras for example. In the street it is perfectly legal to shoot, but if you have a person on screen for a long period of time- not incidental like passing by- it is good to get a permission to use image form signed. If you are at Uni or school, talk to your teacher about it, and use common sense- get papers signed, get permission and above all be polite. Making enemies doesn't get you anywhere. Listen to people's concerns and work out how to resolve them.
