Question:

Reeds for the clarinet?

i have a student clarinet and i need to know what kind of reed do i need thx :)

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Ricos aren't quite THAT bad for beginners, IMO. When I have a brand new student, I feel they're ok. After the student advances (usually 1-2 years) and they're playing on 3's and into the highest register, then I advise Rico Royals.

After the student is in the 8th-9th grade or so, and assuming they began in 5th grade, I move them to Vandorens, but ONLY if their playing and concept of sound will make that a smart move.

And as far as reed strength, that all depends on what mouthpiece brand you have, not your playing level!!!! Most beginner mouthpieces work great from a 2 up to a 3 reed. Many advanced mouthpieces work best with a 3 to a 3.5. There are not all that many people who play on a 4 or a 5, so don't get into the thought process that reed strength equals playing ability!!
