How to clean a flute?

I normally clean it with cotten balls and rubbing alcohol. However I haven't played it in awhile and haven't clean if for just as long. Its pretty tarnished now and I have no idea how to get it off. If anyone has any ideas I would be very thankful.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: First of all, you need to determine the finish. A chrome plated flute will receive different treatment than a silver, gold, or even platinum plated flute. If your flute is completely tarnished, it might be more beneficial to take it to a shop and have it dipped. this will give you a head start on future maintenance, and at the same time, the repair person will make all the necessary adjustments and check your pads for wear.
